Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

Sweet little Isla has moved out of the baby nursery and into her 'big girl' room!  Her Momma, Jenn, asked me to help create custom linens for Isla's new digs.

Jenn chose fabrics from the gorgeous Modern Meadow fabric collection by Joel Dewberry. With vibrant shades of berry pink, medium pink, light pink, beach sand tan, white, and citrus green, Isla's new room has a grow-with-me decor that's appropriate for a toddler now and will work for years to come as she becomes even more of a big-girl.

The walls of the room are a gorgeous brown. A lovely backdrop for white birch tree wall decals. Isla LOVES little critters of all kinds, so some forest friends sprinkled among the trees is perfect.  Her Daddy painted one wall with magnetic paint and we're making applique owl magnets for her to play with. Watch for the deets on how to make your own in an upcoming post.

We coordinated curtains, duvet covers for the comforters, bumper pillow covers, pillowcases, toss pillows, and curtains.  Follow along with us as we show you how we created  a fun look for a special little girl. We'll share the deets for all our projects.

Up first: the bedding. Isla is sleeping in a darling little toddler bed that's about 45 inches long. It will extend to the size of a twin bed.  Her room is big enough for two beds, so she'll be able to have sleepovers with cousin Sophie, best bud Addie, and more friends to come.

In the reduce, reuse, recycle spirit, Jenn is using comforters she already owns and we're slipping them into duvet covers we made from Dogwood Bloom in Berry. Invisible zippers hide the closure.  The bumper pillows are made from more Modern Meadow fabrics. The piping detail is the same berry color of the duvet. Each side of the pillow showcases a different fabric, giving two possible looks. Fun, eh?

The pillowcases  were also handmade from more Modern Meadow fabrics. They feature 3 fun design details: a border, piping, and a contrast hem.  Get the free tutorial for making some pillowcases of your own here.

The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow

One of the most precious things about sewing for others is the privilege of creating an item to be worn during a special event of a child's life.  Something I made is captured in their family album and becomes part of the story of their life. I know it's a tiny part, but it still feels like an honor every time.

This week has been filled with lovely opportunities to create special items for the beautiful children of friends.

Claudia is playing the role of Lil' Orphan Annie in her Jr. High play.  The dress is made from roma knit with organic white knit collar and trim.  There's a bow tied in the back and the dress has just a bit of twirl for those dance steps during the musical numbers. The best part was how Claudia's face lit up when she saw her reflection in the mirror during the final fitting. She looks darling! Underneath the mammoth curls of the Annie wig, she has GORGEOUS long hair. Amazing how the costume really transformed her. Here’s a peek of a dress-rehearsal for the play.

Do you have special memories of fave outfit worn for special events in your childhood? What were they?
